Welding

Extensive know-how and certified

With over 60 years of welding and fabrication experience and specialization in Stainless-Steels, James Ross Ltd./SMS is your primary choice for the Highest Quality results. All of our welders are CWB Certified to CSA W47.1, W47.2, W59.13 and equipped with the most up to date training and safety equipment. We take great pride in maintaining the upmost stainless-steel welding standards possible, and constantly remain focused on continual improvement for welding and all of manufacturing related work methods. Whether your needs are small, or large, our five huge welding bays and four high tonnage capacity overhead cranes can easily and safely manage the tasks at hand.

We take no shortcuts!

Instead, we spend the time making sure our welds will be 100%. This requires robust procedures for complete verification of all equipment and settings prior to fabrication and welding. For example, operational settings involving areas such as Shielding Gases, Flow Pressures and Equipment Amperage must be absolutely correct prior to weld commencement.

Weld Surface Preparation

Prior to welding, we clean all related surfaces to ensure no risks exist for weld failure. We do this by utilizing various methods which range from mechanical sanding with belts pads, sponges or Stainless-Steel wool. If we are reconditioning a used component, we will perform Abrasive Blasting using Pure Silica Glass Bead. For re-conditioning components that have severe internal surface contamination (Pipe etc.), we also offer Pickling (Acid) Bath to ensure all surfaces are non-contaminated and immediate Passivation takes place.

Final Inspection

Once welding is complete, we then perform a 100% visual inspection, this ensures no faults exist. In the event a fault is identified, we quarantine the component in question and perform Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control (DMAIC) as per our Quality Standards. Once all visual inspections have passed, welds are then cleaned to allow for full passivation to take place.

Cleaning

Performed by one of three, or a combination of methods:

Method 1: Mechanical surface cleaning
This is performed with Sanding Pads, Abrasive Sponges or Stainless-Steel Wool (Grit will match end use application which can range from Industrial Service to Fine Food Grade Quality).  This is used on small areas or surfaces that require more detailed attention. Thereafter, once this process is complete and exposed to ambient air, the Chromium Oxide layer will re-deposit itself on the Stainless-Steel surface and be Passivated.

Method 2: Abrasive Blasting
This is performed in our Giant, Full Recovery, Blast Room.  For this process we use Pure Silica Glass Bead in a fully enclosed environment that is Government, Environment and Safety approved. Once complete, the Stainless-Steel surface once again re-passivates itself.

Method 3: Pickling Acid Bath
Under very demanding circumstances, we immerse components in an Acid Bath. This removes a very thin layer from the Stainless-Steel surface and immediately re-deposits the Chromium Oxide Layer (Passivation) on all surfaces. The Acid Bath is particularly suitable for Small Components and Piping Internals (Loose or Spooled piping systems).

Post Weld Testing

On occasion, more significant testing is required. To support such requests, we offer the following:

  • Non-Destructive Tests (NDT)
  • Radiography
  • Ultrasonic
  • Liquid Penetrant
  • Magnetic Particle Inspection (All NDT Technicians are certified to CGSB 48.9712 and SNT-TC-1A standards which is recommended practice.)
